Building a Fish Pond
To build a garden fish pond will not only provide enjoyment and interest, but also a natural and relaxing environment as well. A fish pond in your backyard may become the focal point of your backyard conversations. So spice it up with these tips and techniques.
Place your fish pond in a place where you can best view it from, whether from a deck or the patio. Make it coincide with the natural surroundings. Do not place the pond where the sun can overheat it. However, do expose the pond to sufficient sunlight only enough for the aquatic plants to grow well.
Nestle it where it gets afternoon shade but not under the trees. Avoid placing the pond under the trees, so as to avoid leaves falling into the pond and creating a maintenance nightmare.
It is best to slightly elevate the soil surrounding the pond so that excess water will not enter into it. Plan the drainage system of the pond, making sure that it draws the water away from your house.
Polyvinyl chloride pond liners (PVC liners) are used to keep the water from draining out through puncture holes. This method is almost always necessary for large, or free-form design ponds, even if it they are situated in clay soils.
In determining the size of the PVC you will need, you have to know the maximum length, width, and depth of the pond. The general formula is length + double depth x width + double depth = required liner amount in sq metres. This will give you enough PVC overlap to securely hold down the pond edges.
Pond liners come in different thickness as well. The thicker the pond liner, the more resistant it is to punctures. Cement may be considered an optional pool liner. However, it requires more expertise to install and it may cost more than the regular plastic pond liner.
Also, considering that many ponds are quite small, a convenient option is the preformed pond made from fibreglass. They come in different shapes and sizes, are durable and stable, often even including built in waterfalls, or any design based on your preferences.
Time your pond building when the ground is not overly wet or frozen. Dig the hole according to your design and secure the pond liner for larger installments. The correct ratio between the size and the depth of the pond is very important for the biological balance of the pond.
The following table can be used as a basic guide.
Surface area 3 – 5 sq. m = Depth 60 – 80cm
Surface area 5 – 15 sq. m = Depth 80 – 100cm
Surface area more than 15 sq. m = 100cm and more.
With all fish ponds you should consider a minimum depth of 1 metre.
Instal the pump and any other hardware next. Make sure that electricity is readily available if you plan to use lights, filters, or a water re-circulating device.
Then landscape around the pond, landscaping the surroundings around your pond will provide a natural dwelling place for birds and frogs, etc.
When adding the water, let the pond sit for a few days before adding plants.
Let the plants settle for at least one week before placing the fish.
Then sit back and enjoy your backyard fish pond!
