Gayfeather (Liatris punctata) is a long-lived perennial that is perfectly adapted to western and desert gardens. A native to southwestern Canada, western U.S. and northwestern Mexico, it puts forth a tall, one to three foot spike in early to mid summer. The spike can be purple or white, and the two planted together will add color, texture and shape to your garden.
Autumn Joy
This is a wonderful perennial that you can plant in your desert garden. With this choice you will have great leaves in pretty whorls. These leaves can be any number of different colors and can be bought to go with any desert landscaping design. This plant is the ultimate for desert landscaping because it can grow in rock gardens with ease.

Oyster plant, Moses-in-the-cradle
The Oyster Plant is succulent looking and can be used to make a dense ground cover. It is a perennial herb with succulent stems; leaves crowded, flat, stiff, pointed, dark green above, purple to green below; flowers at base of leaves, small, white, 3-parted, held between 2 purple bracts; fruit a capsule. This plant prefers to grow in pure sand. It grows better with a little water and some fertilizer occasionally.
The plant sap from ALL parts of the plant is POISONOUS. Symptoms include stinging and itching following contact of cell sap with skin or eyes. Ingestion causes irritation of lips, mouth, tongue and throat, also abdominal pain.
Crown of Thorns
A low-growing evergreen shrub with very thorny grooved stems and branches.The stems are purplish brown and are 1-2 feet tall on average, but can reach 3 feet in a warm climate. The thorns are sharp pointed and are 1/2 inch long on avarage.
The ovate leaves are 1-3 inches long, few in number, and are found mostly at the growing ends. The cyathia, a type of inflorescence characteristic of the genus Euphorbia, are born in small umbels and have showy, ovate and bright red bracts. The small flowers are produced in clusters of 2-8 at the tips of green flower stem about 1 inch long.
Poisonous parts:
This plant contains caustic and irritant chemicals in the latex. Avoid contact to the skin and eyes. General symptoms of ingestion are: abdominal pains, blistering/irritation of the mouth/throat and vomiting.
Yellow Columbine
It grows well in full sunlight and well-drained soil texture. It grows to a height of 3 feet. It is one of the most graceful desert plants, which is heat resistant, hard and vigorous. It has a yellow flower bloom that attracts butterflies and humming birds.
Pine Leaf Penstemon
It is well grown in full sunlight with a height of 16 inches. It bears a fine textured leaves which gives a wonderful look. It is most popular plant that attracts humming birds. The plant blooms a bright orange-red colored flower up to 6 weeks during summer.
Tetraneuris
It loves to grow in dry and plenty of sunlight having well-drained soil. It is about 6 inches tall. It is a dwarf plant and can be grown in the front boundary. It bears blue-green colored leaves with golden-yellow flowers. It blooms in whole spring up to the fall starts.
Red Hyssop
It also grows in full sunlight. It has a height of 4 feet generally. It is a very strong and tough perennial with red, apricot or orange colored flower. It blooms throughout the summer. The leaves release an aromatic smell from them.
Salvia
Salvia is a good choice. They grow well in sun as well as in shade areas. Generally, it grows up to a height of 2 feet. You can select the particular colored variety that will complement your garden theme.
